Why Buy a Wine Glass?
Riedel glassware pioneered the notion that a wine glass should serve as a compliment to the wine being served in it.
  • There should be a thin rim on the glass to concentrate on the taste of the wine. Glasses with thick rims feel intrusive in the mouth.
  • The glass should be as plain as possible since its purpose is to support the wine and show the colour and condition of the wine – not to take away from it.
  • The opening at the top should be big enough for your nose to fit in, but not lose the aroma and bouquet. Since most of what we taste is actually what we smell, this last characteristic of the glass cannot be overrated. Glasses whose rims are larger than their bowls lose the bouquet in one swirl.
  • The wine should be poured into the glass to the widest part of the bowl. Hold the glass by the base because holding it by the bowl tends to warm the wine unnecessarily.
George Riedel has designed his glasses precisely by shape, size, and thickness by using the map of the human tongue taste sensors. He has shaped glasses so that they deliver the maximum amount of sweetness in one wine and toned down a bitter note in another, while opening up wine’s aromas which are a huge component of taste. It is important to remember that something as simple as a glass can be an important part of the dining experience.
